Tech Exec Embraces Lifelong Learning through Coaching Program

With over 30 years of experience under his belt, Ljubo Mandic is a long-time veteran of the computer networking industry. Throughout his career he’s built strong relationships, developed leadership skills and gained relevant experience and expertise to hold executive roles. Today, he is the chief development officer of Gigamon where he leads research and development activities. His top motivator, a passion for learning, has been the driving force behind his success.

After a friend recommended that he formalize his knowledge in coaching and mentoring, Ljubo sought out a coach training program. He chose UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education’s Coaching Certificate Program. “What drove me to this program is that it is for life and work, not just work,” said Ljubo. “I’m a firm believer that it’s hard to separate the two because you’re the same person at work and at home.”

We spoke with Ljubo to learn more about his experience in the program and how he has benefited from it.

What were your goals going into the program?

I wanted to engage in open debates, get feedback and learn some additional mechanics of coaching. As a VP, I had experience in a lot of what’s taught in the program, but I came in with an open mind. I learned a lot of new methodologies, but the biggest value was hearing from others in the cohort.

What did you appreciate most about the program?

The diversity of the cohort was one of the most valuable things. I was probably one of the few people there with a technical background, so the environment was different from what I’m used to. Not everybody thinks the same and the value comes from the diversity of viewpoints.

The instructors were also very good. It was a practical program, and I am happy to have joined. If you’re looking to get your ICF certification, the program also provides detailed instructions on how to get there and the courses are tailored to it. I always recommend the program.

How can you make an impact through coaching?

Help others reach their potential as a coach

Helping others reach their potential—I know it sounds cliché, but it is exciting when you see somebody else thriving with your help. The important part is giving and receiving feedback. We all have blind spots. You don’t see how you are or how you behave until somebody points it out. That’s the best gift anybody can give you, and that’s what I’m passionate about. Seeing people thrive with my help is the best part of my job.

How have you been able to apply what you learned in the program to your professional life?

I’m able to apply it daily. I learned to appreciate additional points of view regarding the sensitivities of how people think. The level of vulnerability that people showed in class helped me understand how it can be valuable at work. If you show empathy or vulnerability yourself, people are more willing to do the same, which improves your relationship with others.

How has it impacted your personal life?

It has helped me better understand the people around me. Meeting people with different backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses allowed me to grow as a person. This personal growth has helped me broaden my own perspectives.

How can vulnerability help make you a better coach?

As a leader, being vulnerable shows people that it’s okay to share. Some people need to share, and if they feel that nobody is listening, it’s hard to open up. The key is to listen to each other. One of the exercises in the program was to just sit and listen for three minutes. It was hard not to respond. Attentive listening is difficult—you want to share your own experience because you’re so attuned to talking, but you can’t.

What advice would you give to someone who may be considering the program?

Go for it! It helps you regardless of how experienced you are. There are many things to learn both from lectures and cohort members.

I’ve done a lot of research, and I haven’t seen any program that suits my needs better than what UC Davis has to offer. This program was the best choice, and I certainly don’t regret it.
